The West Tisbury Library Foundation announced this week that a pledge of $300,000 has brought the library past the halfway mark in its goal for private donations toward expansion and renovation of the library facility. The donors, who requested anonymity, retain the right to name one of the library’s rooms down the road when the facility reopens (planned for 2014).

Pizza Preservation

Flatbread Pizza continues its benefit nights with an evening devoted to the West Tisbury Congregational Church on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 5 to 9 p.m.

During these hours a portion of proceeds from all pizza sales will go to help the church’s capital campaign to preserve the historic church and improve accessibility started this summer. There will also be a silent auction.

Oak Bluffs School Benefit

Fine jewelry, culinary treats, unique experiences and other items will be up for auction on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Farm Neck. All proceeds benefit the Oak Bluffs School eighth grade trip to New York city and Philadelphia. Oak Bluffs School assistant principal Carlin Hart will preside as auctioneer.

The trip, which takes place in June, concludes a year of studying American history.

Cycle MV Ride

How are the thighs feeling? Good or really, really, really good. If in the second category, the Island has just the event for you this Saturday, Oct. 1. Hop on a bike and ride 100 kilometers for charity. For those of the wimpy sort there is also a 50K race.

Richard (Dick) C. Brown of Oak Bluffs, 95, was the star of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy versus MIT football game last Saturday in Clean Harbors Stadium, Buzzards Bay. It was the Buccaneers’ first seasonal home game. As part of the half-time show, Mr. Brown received the academy’s alumni of the year award.

Farm Neck Looks to Give

The Farm Neck Foundation is calling for applicants for its 2011 grants, open to all Island nonprofit organizations whose goal is to improve the quality of life in the Martha’s Vineyard community.
