Flying High on Wind and Treats
Years ago, Lani Carney, known by young artists far and wide as Miss Lani, took a trip with her daughter to Puerto Rico. While strolling down the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, a balmy wind coming in off the ocean, they came upon a kite festival. It was magical. “It felt like we were borrowing a taste of the wind,” Miss Lani said.
Susan Savory, a woman whose name speaks to time in the kitchen, spends her days cooking up a different sort of delectable. Ms. Savory is in charge of the children’s books at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore. Her title may be manager of kids’ books, or something to that effect, but that seems so corporate a moniker when describing someone who so embodies her work she appears almost like a character in a children’s book herself. Perhaps Fairy Godmother of Little People’s Literature might be closer to the mark.
Coco’s Wreaths
Corinne de Langavant, aka MVTV’s Coco the clown, is selling fresh wreaths to offset the costs of a special-needs presentation she plans to give at a New York city conference. De Langavant’s show, Coco and the Kids, uses art education to help people dealing with autism.
Cookies Against Cancer
LeRoux at Home is baking cookies to battle cancer. The Vineyard Haven home store will host a bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for pediatric research.
In celebration of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum has launched a new online exhibit sharing the stories of Vineyard World War II veterans.
Those Who Serve: Martha’s Vineyard and World War II, began as an exhibition in the Museum during 2009 and 2010. The exhibit’s popularity resulted in an oral history book curated by Linsey Lee. Short audio excerpts of those interviews have now been put together with archival photos in an online exhibit allowing people all over the world to hear the stories.
Let Us Now Praise Our Veterans
On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, we are given the opportunity to take a deep, collective breath and say thank you to the men and women who have bravely served our country.
Here on the Vineyard we bear witness in many ways, beginning with a parade in Oak Bluffs. The parade recently received recognition as a special designation of regional importance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
