Come May for the past two years, a pair of ducks have come to nest on Rose Styron’s lush lawn overlooking the outer Vineyard Haven harbor. “They eat a lot, at least the mother eats a lot, and the father, a gorgeous green-necked mallard, guards her. And when she’s fat enough, she goes to make a nest under the dock,” Mrs. Styron said, looking out at the water from her porch.

Hoecakes and Whirligigs

Hoecakes and Whirligigs Week is about to begin. And what, you may ask, is that?

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is helping kids get in touch with their inner historian, or at least have a lot of fun, by creating arts and crafts days devoted to the work and play of children on Martha’s Vineyard in the late 1700s. Each session will have different activities to try, such as making butter, processing wool from the sheep to fabric, candle making and, beginning Tuesday, July 10, cooking hoecakes.

A new building has been added to the Vineyard Haven skyline. Well, actually it isn’t new—it’s been there since 1895, but a recent clearing of trees has exposed the 10,000 square-foot former marine hospital to the Lagoon Pond, to cars entering Vineyard Haven via Beach Road and to boats leaving the harbor.

Island Health Care

Elizabeth A. Moriarty, nurse practitioner, and Dr. Richard F. Sullivan have joined the Island Health Care rural health clinic in Edgartown.

Ms. Moriarty started in May, coming from Hampden County Physician Associates in western Massachusetts. Dr. Sullivan takes over as Medical Director for Dr. John Lamb, who served in that capacity for over five years and will now be operating solely out of his practice at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Nonprofit organizations on the Vineyard looking for volunteer help can now advertise their openings for free in the Vineyard Gazette.

This week the Gazette is introducing a new classified advertising category called Volunteer Opportunities, which will appear in both the print edition of the newspaper and online at mvgazette.com. Any tax-exempt charitable or arts organization wishing to advertise for unpaid help may do so without charge, said Jane Seagrave, publisher of the Gazette.
