Attic Sale

The West Tisbury Congregational Church’s annual attic and barn sale takes place on the church grounds Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All year long church members collect, sort and clean sale items in preparation for this busy day. Collectibles range from enamelware to English bone china. Table linens mingle with garden tools, kayaks, bicycles, children’s games and small furniture pieces. All proceeds benefit the historic church.

The rain date will be Sunday, July 15, from 1 to 4 p.m.

It’s summer on the Vineyard, and they’re on the front lines, delivering lobster rolls to hungry hordes, serving up beers to thirsty tourists.

For wait staff at Vineyard restaurants and bars, the summer is the big show, the time of year where crowds make up for the slower off-season months. Summer days — and nights — are crazy, some say, but the benefits, like living on the Vineyard and being part of a tight-knit “industry” community, are big enough to keep them going, year after year.

On a recent sparkling morning at Inkwell Beach, summer resident and retired Boston judge Ed Redd emerged from his daily swim and carefully considered a question: Does Martha’s Vineyard still retain a certain magic for African Americans — longtime residents and new visitors alike? Judge Redd, a barrel-chested, affable ambassador for the Polar Bears, the historic group that finds invigoration and spirituality in morning swims at the Inkwell from July 4 to Labor Day, didn’t pause for long.

“Forward, march!” he commanded for the 43rd year, and the parade began its journey down the West Tisbury Road.

All eyes in Edgartown were on Col. Fred B. (Ted) Morgan Jr., as he performed his last march as grand marshal and chief organizer of the Edgartown Fourth of July parade.

He marched upright, as always, in perfect time with the drumbeat, while spectators shouted in appreciation from the sidelines. “Let’s go, Ted!” “Alright, Ted!” “Yeah, Mr. Morgan,” they cheered.

Biggest Party in Town

It is the week of two big birthdays. There was that affair of the country on July 4, red, white and blue with flags waving and fireworks bursting.

Closer to home, there is the birth of Tisbury.

This is the 41st year for the street fair, established in 1971 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the town. The revelers will throng to Main street in Vineyard Haven on Sunday, July 8, beginning at 6 p.m.
