Betsy Bell Baliunas was always intimidated to walk into the Box. The name didn’t help either. The Box didn’t look like your normal gym, Ms. Baliunas recalled. “Where are the machines? There are no machines. There’s a rope — what am I going to do with that?” she wondered.

A silo chicken coop designed by Hutkers Architects is currently on display at the SBS Grain Store in Vineyard Haven. The coop is a two-story structure built with found and recycled materials, a grass rooftop, a laying box with privacy for hens, and other features.

It began with Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. Scooby-Doo helped, too. The year was 1977 and Andy Heyward was in his early 20s working his first real job. Never mind that the job consisted entirely of sweeping out a warehouse and getting his boss sandwiches at the nearby deli. His boss was Joseph Barbera who with William Hanna was essentially the entire cartoon industry at the time.

Sheldon Hackney, a noted historian, humanitarian, academic and longtime Vineyard resident, died Thursday, Sept. 12, at home, surrounded by his family. He was 79. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mr. Hackney was a respected figure on and off the Vineyard, where he had been coming since the 1960s.

When Alan Lovewell was a young child growing up on the Vineyard, his mother had worked out a summertime arrangement with a local fisherman. Teresa Yuan would exchange her well-respected egg rolls for some of Tom Turner’s weekly catch, creating what was probably young Alan’s first exposure to the concept of a cooperative fishery.
