All are invested in the well-being of the Island community.

Together, they serve the hearts, souls and bodies of Islanders in their daily work, said Women Empowered board member Ljuba Davis.

It is not easy to describe Jill McLean Taylor in few words. She was a New Zealander who married an Irish man and made her home in America, a physical therapist who went back to school and earned her doctorate while raising three sons. She was the kind of professor who took calls from students at night and the kind of person who researched the women of her family, spurred on by five words in an obituary. She had a big smile, her friends and family recall, and a messy office.

The Farm Neck Foundation is requesting submissions for 2013 grants. All Island nonprofit organizations whose goal is to improve the quality of life in the Martha’s Vineyard community are eligible. The deadline is Nov. 1.

Good news about Greta, the great dog who won so many hearts at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. She has been adopted! Last seen, she was sitting regally in the back of her new owners’ car looking right at home. The staff and the volunteers at the shelter are overjoyed both for Greta and for her new family.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Living Local Harvest Festival kicks into full swing with day-long events at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then from 6 to 10 p.m. is the community potluck with a dance afterwards featuring music by the Flying Elbows.
