The Cost of Eating
In most places, a walk down a supermarket aisle does not lend itself to experiences of awe and incredulity. But Martha’s Vineyard isn’t like most places.
Consider Sunset heirloom tomatoes, which have been selling at Cronig’s Market for seven dollars and ninety-nine cents. The price of one large Sunset tomato is roughly equivalent to the cost of a passenger trip between the Island and Woods Hole, or to one hour of work at the Massachusetts minimum wage.
Berrying Time
Lyn Hinds of Crafts Field Way in Edgartown emerged from her outdoor shower one recent afternoon to find herself face to face with a young skunk. Each frightened the other and each fled without incident. But Mrs. Hinds had a long enough glimpse of the skunk to see that its nose was encased in a jelly jar.

I thank you for printing the interview with Cronig’s owner Steve Bernier. He, like Paul Revere, is sounding an important wakeup call.
One solution to the food problem, similar to that which we’re trying to apply to the energy problem, is to localize production.
Board President Responds

Last Monday, July 14 the board of directors of the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club decided, after considerable deliberation, to dismiss the employees of our Second Hand Store and close the store temporarily pending reorganization and re-staffing. Since the store is an important fixture on the Island and our action has evoked a storm of discussion, we feel we owe the community some explanation.
Community service is an admirable endeavor as it allows you to work for something you believe in and give back to the community. By participating in community service, you can feel connected to your community. While some students at Marta’s Vineyard Regional High School do community service because it looks good on a college transcript or meets a requirement, other students intrinsically want to help their community. Regardless of their motive, many students at the high school are often confused as to how they can actually get involved and what types of things they can do.
