I like to wake up by walking somewhere each morning in any season. I have favorite walks. In West Tisbury, one takes me through the woods past Glimmerglass Pond, another across a Whiting field.

The story has it that 40 years ago this spring, Massachusetts state Sen. William (Billy) Bulger was on Nantucket and decided to go for a dip in the deep blue sea.

He looks up into the heavens and says in a voice filled with wonder, do you realize that neutrinos can pass through the earth and never touch anything. His voice a whisper. The man is truly in awe.

I still remember my first day at the charter school. It was the first time I could go to school in jeans, and a T-shirt. I was not shy or anything, but I only knew about 10 words in English.

Last month we invited folks who support Danny at school and in the community to what we called a “vision party.” We invited them but we really didn’t expect them to show up.

In 1992 a group of parents and teachers collaborated on a new academic program for the Chilmark School. It sprang from the belief that children and adults can learn together outside the classroom.
