Former Sharky's Space to Become an Indian Restaurant

A new year-round Indian and Mediterranean restaurant could soon be opening in Edgartown.

A new year-round Indian and Mediterranean restaurant could soon be opening in Edgartown.

The restaurant, called Indigo, plans to open in the former Sharky’s Cantina on Upper Main street by the start of summer. The town’s select board voted to approve the restaurant’s liquor license application on Monday with a condition that the restaurant passes all inspections.

“We’re looking forward to some wonderful vindaloo,” said select board member Art Smadbeck.

Babu Koganti, the co-owner of Indigo, said the restaurant is wrapping up renovations and hopes to open by the end of May. The restaurant plans to have a full open bar and a menu featuring traditional Indian and Mediterranean foods with options for burgers and pizza.

Mr. Kognati said in an interview after the meeting that the atmosphere will be cozy and casual with a private venue space and seasonal patio. He said menu prices will range from $15 to $30.

The restaurant’s parent company, Rebel Foods Inc., owns over 20 restaurants off-Island, including Madras Dosa Co and Vaanga in Boston, Gyro & Kebab House in Norwood and Godavari in Woburn.

The former Sharky’s location has been empty since the Mexican restaurant closed in 2022. A proposal last April by Carlos Gomes Teles Filho to open a sports bar and arcade called Seagrass Bar and Grill never came to fruition.

Jai Ma! Madras Dosa, Vaanga, and Godavari are all terrific. Now I won't have to go off island for my South Indian food fix!

So looking forward to having some authentic Indian food prepared by Indian Americans here on the island! Welcome Indigo!

Not sure I have ever been to a place that serves Mediterranean AND Indian food. Would be happy with either - looking for vegetarian (not vegan!) options. Eager to explore.

I was excited for the restaurant that was announced last spring, but happy to see someone is finally going to open in this space - it’s been empty for too long! Good luck on the new place.
