The restaurant was still being renovated earlier this month.

Sports Bar and Arcade Planned for New Edgartown Restaurant

The Edgartown select board Tuesday approved Carlos Teles' liquor license for a new restaurant at the former Sharky's Cantina location.

A new restaurant with a sports bar and arcade could be soon opening in Edgartown.

The town’s select board Tuesday voted to approve Carlos Gomes Teles Filho’s liquor license application for his new restaurant in the former Sharky’s Cantina on Upper Main street.

Known as Seagrass Bar and Grill, Mr. Teles’ new eatery is planned to have games at the site of the former Brazilian bakery and the bar and restaurant in the former Sharky’s.

Mr. Teles told the board he would serve pub food such as burgers, pizza and seafood, but he did not give the board a tentative opening date for the restaurant.

Work at the restaurant has been going on for months after Sharky’s Cantina closed in 2022 when its lease was not renewed. Sharky’s, a Mexican restaurant, first opened on Cinco de Mayo in 2008, just a few years after the Oak Bluffs location opened on Circuit avenue.

Mr. Teles owns a landscaping company and is also behind the Square Rigger in Edgartown and Nina’s Dine and Dash in Vineyard Haven.

He did not immediately return a request for comment after the meeting Tuesday.

The Edgartown select board was in favor of the new restaurant, with members Margaret Serpa and Arthur Smadbeck both voting in favor. Select board member Michael Donroma, who owns the neighboring garden center, was not at the meeting.

“It’s been redone and refreshed and it’s going to do what it’s always done for some many years,” Ms. Serpa said.

After the vote Mr. Smadbeck wished the owner good luck.

“Thanks, I’m going to need it,” Mr. Teles joked.

I actually like the idea of a sports bar in this location as it is something that is currently missing in the Edgartown restaurant lineup. Hopefully on the more affordable side. However, I do not like the idea of the arcade - I get it for families, however in my experience, arcades with all the bells, whistles and noise cheapens the atmosphere. Jopefully, this will be just a minor (and seperate) part of the overall restaurant.

I sure miss Sharky’s. Great good and reasonable priced.
Best of luck with the new place.

Arcade amusement is offered in OB with Ryan's. And yes, we already have at least one sports bar, basically across the street from this development. More TV's, neon lights, noise. Don't know if anyone remembers the Italian restaurant before Sharky's. Charming and great food. We need a family dining trattoria more than a Gamestop.

Carol, I agree. I would prefer an upscale Italian restaurant. I am not a sports fan, and I feel every restaurant/bar is a sports bar in Edgartown.

carol, i'm with you. sounds like the new owners are not familiar with the island. another sports bars. ho hum. there's a million of them on the mainland. i thought "lawry's" seafood was great and then there was a "lousianna style" restaurant after that which was excellent! and different. not much thinking went into having a sports bar with pub food. yuk. oh well, i suppose they will do well in the summer because of the location.

Local for generations Edgartown

Nope, don’t need another sports bar but, worse than that.. an arcade? UGH…It’s maddening when those who just got off the boat, reminisce about Sharkeys or the restaurant prior to that. Let’s talk about the good old days of the island, and Lawry’s! Local family-owned, and employed just about every local kid here.

OB Resident Oak Bluffs

Did you miss the part about this is a local guy owning the restaurant? And local landlords as well? And come to think of it if you're one of those "I've been here for generations" types then why did you let everything get so bad??? Loser.

I’m remember when that location was Lawry’s Seafood Restaurant, for many many years. The freshest seafood, right off the boat. We were all so sorry when it closed.

Not particularly exciting as a sports bar is right down the street, and options for pizza, burgers, and seafood all nearby already.

Excited Edgartown

I'm excited for anything but an empty run down building. I'm excited for a refurbished building bringing in tax dollars along with meals tax.
I'm excited about being able to bring or keep local (Edgartown) kids in town on a rainy day instead of having me drive them to OB to the Arcade. I'm excited for the gas and time I'll save sitting in traffic by taking them down the street instead of to another town. I'm excited to give another local family (Teles Family) my money instead of an off island corporation that has made the other Sports Bar nothing about being or keeping local.

I guess you could say I am excited!
