From cigars to waders and tube socks, Trader Fred sold it all - at a discount.

Fred Mascolo, Known to Islanders as Trader Fred, Dies at 65

A lawyer by education and a salesman by personality, Fred Mascolo opened his first store on Upper Main street in Edgartown in 1982, and eventually ran nine stores in the New England area.

Frederic D. Mascolo, better known to all on the Vineyard as Trader Fred, died on August 30 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

He was 65 years old and had been battling a terminal illness for many years.

A lawyer by education and a salesman by personality, Mr. Mascolo opened his first store, Trader Fred’s, on Upper Main street in Edgartown in 1982, and eventually ran nine stores in the New England area.

In a May 2023 interview, Mr. Mascolo explained his shift from the legal world to a purveyor in discount goods this way: “As a lawyer you deal with everybody’s problems for the rest of your life and I didn’t want to do that,” he said.

Instead, he helped Islanders find deals on everything from tube socks to fishing gear, beach umbrellas and waders.

“The whole store is based on an old-fashioned concept, a trading post,” he said in the May 2023 interview. “We sell everything.”

For a time he was also the Island’s premier cigar seller. His high-profile customers included President Bill Clinton during his Vineyard vacations.

Mr. Mascolo also worked in real estate, purchasing Jane Brown Associates real estate agency, and served on the Edgartown planning board. On occasion he acted in the television series The Defenders and The Switch, with his friend Jim Belushi.

This summer, while residing in the Henrietta Brewer House, he hosted a steady stream of well wishers.

“Everyone, in every aspect of my life, has come back to help,” he said. “You couldn’t put a price on that.”

A celebration of Mr. Mascolo’s life will take place at a future date.

Fred was a kind man, always had a smile and above all, his generosity of spirit was a gift to all that knew him. The island has lost a treasure.

So sad to hear this. I worked for while in real estate for Fred. But more important Buddy and I were his friends, as were practically everyone here on the island. He was a true island character. As Gabrielle stated, the island has truly lost a treasure❤️

What a loss! Truly a wonderful man... as a long time summer guest/resident/visitor, we met, swapped cigars and lacrosse stories as old friends. My condolences to all who knew and cared for Fred.

Freddy was not only kind and generous but he was the best Storyteller ever. To sit down and have a cocktail and a cigar with him was to relish life and hear some amazing tales. When I saw him last month he told me and a few friends another story about his life that made our heads spin and brought incredible smiles to our faces. He was truly one of a kind and the island will be diminished but grateful for his time here. And geez, half of us are probably wearing some of his clothes right now! Rip Fred. Save me a cigar.

How sad, his business won’t continue. Another treasure lost. Islanders have given everything away. Dodo birds against the modern world.

A visit to Trader Fred’s was an enhancement of a visit to MV most recently I’d mentioned this was my Dads favorite Island shop. He handed me two hats to gift my Dad and thank him for his support. Rest easy Fred, we could sure benefit from more wonderful souls like you. You certainly made the Island a better place.

Truly a great guy. Many years ago I popped into Trader Freds after hitting the liquor store next door and met Fred. He told me that on occasion he would acquire clothing that was “irregular”. I said what exactly do you mean. He proceeds to show me a Ralf Loren polo shirt. First of all the logo was on the wrong side of the shirt and the guy on the horse was riding backwards or upside down . I can’t remember. I bought two. I used to wear them out when I was partying. Only the severely impaired ever noticed the imperfection.

Trader Fred's was always one of our first stops when visiting the island. We had opportunity to meet him several times and he was so kind (and may've connected us with more that our fair share of Fuente cigars over the years). He was an island gem and we will miss our visits to his eclectic shop! May he rest in peace.

It was my privilege to work for Fred in the Edgartown planning office. We may have disagreed on the issues du jour from time to time, but he never took anything personally. He served as guide to Edgartown history and a mentor to me as a new Planning staffer. He was generous without needing to be, and treated me fairly in every case. He was an example of what it means to be a good person and a good citizen. He'll be sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

This is my story of Fred's genuine generosity. I was in line one day at the Registry and had a check for my registrations already filled out per their letters to me for re registration.
This was many years ago, after they tallied all the check was not enough for their fees and some other item. I had no cash and no other check. I felt a tap on my shoulder and 60.00 dollars was in hand. It was Fred, who was behind me and he reached into his own pocket and gave me the needed fee for my registrations. What a gesture as he did not know me at the time. We reacquainted when I went to work for Judy Belushi on William St. We were always connected after that. He never asked for the 60.00 back, but I paid him anyway. Where ever he may be in heaven, I'm sure he's helping anyone he can. God bless you Fred. NEVER FORGET THE LITTLE THINGS, NEVER FORGET THE ONES WHO HAVE HELPED YOU.

I met Fred a couple years ago while doing some last minute Xmass shopping at the Store. I was buying a lot of small gifts for my co-workers and noticed this Awesome Watch in the case near the register. I asked what's the best you'll do for that there was a $300 tag on it. He said that was a Watch I bought for myself years ago a didn't like the way it fit he than asked if I lived here on the Island year Round. I told him yes I'm a Chef here on island and have been for 5yrs he than said I'll give it to you for $100 but the battery needs to changed and no return. I said Deal. It was a AquaSwiss Square Watch and is beautiful. So when I went to have the battery replaced at a jewelry store in Boston in the Diamond district when I visited my friend I visit all the time in Downtown crossing Melinuim Towers the jeweler offered to buy the Watch for $1000 than asked where I got it, this is a very nice Watch
I refused to sell than when I got home to MV I went in to hopefully see Fred witch I did and asked why he gave me such a good deal and He Said. I don't use it and You wanted it so we both win here, I than told him the jeweler offered me $1000 when I had the battery replaced he asked if I sold it to him I replied by pulling up my sleeve and showed him the Watch that's when he said. "That's why I sold it to You for $100 I could tell you really wanted it and I was in the Christmas Spirit and Obviously I was Rite because Your back here showing me. Also You cook for a living and I know that's a hard profession and You can't wear that while cooking so You will appreciate it and cherish it"
Dude is a Legend to say the Least
Rest Easy My Friend I'm Glad I met You and Hope Your Family is at Ease now

I first met Fred when I wanted to look at real estate. He took me around in his old Land Rover (I think it was). He was kind, patient and knew everything. He showed parts of EDG to me that we both knew, I think, that I could not afford but we passed a pleasant hour or so and I am on his mailing list to this day. My daughter bought a terrific bathing suit at Trader Fred's only a week ago. He ALWAYS had what you needed. Sad to see this intelligent and gentle man leave us. Bless you Fred. You were always so nice to me and my family. Thank you.

Fred came to the outdoor worship service I led in a beautiful setting next to Jardin Mahoney’s while I was pastoring FaithMV church. I always gave away a free gift to a first time worshipper. Fred was so generous that he gave me several store items that I could give away as gifts. I would tell the person that received the free gift that it came from Trader Fred’s. I so appreciated Fred’s generosity. I hope and pray that Fred had accepted the free gift of Eternal Life in Jesus Christ before he entered eternity.

I met Fred several years ago, 2017, a few months after my mother died. He tried to help me find a lost treasure. (Of course, I had been going to Trader Fred's for years.)
The story: Summer 2017, I was at a beach on Chappy wearing one of my mother's rings - why, I don't know. I took it off, put it on my beach chair and it somehow fell into the sand.I panicked, started to dig, but you know small things and sand, the sand just swallows everything up. My son remembered that Trader Fred's rented out metal detectors. I tried that, to no avail. When I returned it, Fred was in the store, asked what I had used it for and he said it wasn't powerful enough. He then offered to come BACK to the beach in question and look for the ring with me. We never found the ring, but I was so surprised and grateful that someone took that time out of their day to help me. He apparently was an avid collector of old American coins and searched MV high and low to find treasures.
And just in case - if anyone comes across a small Art Deco gold ring with a star crest and little amethysts at each point, LMK.
