A Vineyard Haven woman and three young children are safe after a Tisbury police officer rescued them from a second-floor apartment that was on fire early Friday morning, police said.
Tisbury police Sgt. Jeffrey Day said officer Nick Sidoti was first on the scene at 130 Cook street after responding to a call just after 1:30 a.m. Friday. The initial call came from the occupant of a downstairs apartment at the address, who reported a fight going on in the second story apartment.
When he arrived, Officer Sidoti discovered a fire in progress on the second floor of the building and saw a woman trying to open a window, according to the police report.
The resident of the apartment downstairs found a ladder and Officer Sidoti used it to climb to the second floor of the building, where he helped rescue the unnamed woman, two young children and a baby.
The Tisbury fire department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire, according to the report. Fire chief Greg Leland subsequently condemned both units in the building, the police report also said.
The family was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to the report. Officer Sidoti was also checked and cleared by EMS.
Sergeant Day commended the work of Officer Sidoti.
“[He] did an extraordinary job,” Sergeant Day told the Gazette by phone Friday. “[Police] are not equipped with the proper personal protective gear, which makes it a dangerous situation to act like that. But he made it work . . . Everyone is alive and safe.”

Thankfully everyone is safe.
Christine VHThankfully everyone is safe. Perhaps this will force the hand of the Town to inspect all rentals to assure the safety of the occupants. Another report stated there was no secondary means of egress.
