A home on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road was severely damaged in a fire Monday and the families living there were displaced, according to the Tisbury fire chief.

A national shortage of volunteers has spread to the Island’s fire departments, prompting some towns to offer more paid positions and rethink their staffing structure.

Greg Leland sued the town last week, arguing the town did not give him a proper hearing to defend himself over charges of favoritism and creating an uncomfortable work environment connected to his relationship with the lead paramedic supervisor.

Firefighters quickly put out a fire at a two-family home on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road Tuesday.

Acting Tisbury fire chief Patrick Rolston can now call the job his own, after the select board voted Friday afternoon to make the arrangement permanent.

Firefighters were called 741 Main street at about 8:45 p.m. and the family that was inside the home was out safe by the time the police department responded.
