New Owners Hungry for Change at Edgartown Diner

The 1950s-themed diner has a new owner and a new name. The Edgartown Diner is owned by chef Ralston Francis and his partner Mavis Hutchinson.

Change is afoot in Edgartown, where the Main Street Diner has a new owner and a new name. The 1950’s themed eatery is now the Edgartown Diner, a name change that reflects the way new chef and owner Ralston Francis wants his customers to think of the diner. He wants it to be a welcoming, regular place for locals, in addition to a step back in culinary time for summer visitors.

“I want to keep it an Island place, so it feels at home,” Mr. Ralston said on a Sunday morning as the last of the breakfast crowd finished their eggs and coffee.

With his partner Mavis Hutchinson, there will be a few more changes soon. The first thing the young couple did after taking ownership of the business in early December, was lower the prices on some of the most popular menu items.

Diner will now feature more local food including Chilmark Coffee.

“If you live here year round, you can come in and enjoy breakfast without having to pay quite so high a price,” Ms. Hutchinson said.

The next thing they did was begin to change the sourcing of some of the ingredients, to reflect more fresh, local food. Already, the cups are filled with Chilmark Coffee, and the vegetables in the omelets are fresh, not previously frozen.

Ms. Hutchinson is joined by her mother Esther Reid in making everyone feel right at home. Customers are already noticing a new vibe, including a willingness to fill special orders, or perhaps put customer requests on the menu.

“You don’t tell the customer no,” Ms. Hutchinson said.

Mr. Francis, a native of Jamaica who was trained at the Southern New Hampshire University culinary program, worked in the kitchen for the Main Street Diner for the past three years. He jumped at the chance to buy the restaurant.

“It just happened,” he said. “The owners wanted to sell.”

Previously, he worked at an upscale Italian restaurant in Atlanta. He first visited Martha’s Vineyard in 2011, and returned the next year for a week-long stay.

“I fell in love with the Island,” Mr. Ralston said. “I decided I really have to come back. It reminds me of back home, the island feeling, surrounded by the water.”

The new sign will be up in a few days, and the diner will remain open every day, except Christmas day, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for breakfast and lunch until Jan. 3. After a winter break, the Edgartown Diner will re-open for business with a grand opening splash in early April.

Sounded great in the beginning...But, does this mean the new diner for "locals" will always be closed from Jan.to April?
Unfortunately, many locals don't get a winter break.

The owners say they will be closed this January to April so that they can partially rebuild and renovate their kitchen. They plan to be open year-round after that.

You purchase a business then you close down for 3 months,GREAT business plan.

Most restaurants close for renovation after a sale. The idea is that it is a new restaurant, not a continuation of yhe old. They put their mark on it.

How long was Ryan's bar closed?

I am so excited about this change. Never cared about the previous diner. The food quality was not good and it was expensive. I am sad that this new venture will be closed during the Winter. We seldom go to Edgartown during the Summer. Too many people.

A welcomed change to be sure. I went there once with my disabled husband and even though the restaurant was basically empty they would not allow us to sit in a booth they made us sit on the hard chairs which was difficult for my husband, we got up and left and have not been back since, plus their prices were so darned expensive.

We use to go to the diner a lot but then the food arrived Luke warm to the table - it took a long time - and the prices kept going up - we transferred to Linda Jeans in OB and Espresso Love. So - we would love to come back and give it a try when we return to the island in May - good luck!

The American dream is to be your own boss, and having a son who is in the culinary arts I can tell you it is not an easy life but it can be a very rewarding life if you are passionate about what you do. Best of luck to this young couple.

Good luck to the new owners! If the old owners are reading this they should know that they did no favors to those of us who live here – anyone at all, frankly, from anywhere – by charging ridiculous prices and providing sub-par food, that as we see from the article, consisted of foodstuffs like frozen vegetables. I look forward to seeing what Ralston and Mavis have in store and am also pleased they will be sourcing their ingredients locally, further supporting both the island economy and spirit. I had stopped going to the Main Street Diner long ago, I will certainly try it once again – this time as the Edgartown Diner. Have a great time, work hard, and stick to the Island values – it will pay off in reputation, business, and good will.

Good luck on your new business, Unfortunately, I think your operating hours don't jive with the locals. Opening at 8 am is too late to catch the working community who are all ready on the job by then.

Ms. Hutchinson waited on us this past summer and delivered good service. I was surprised to see the diner empty on a summer evening. The prices seemed ok, until we received our bill and were surprised with additional charges. Don't necessarily expect that in a diner! NJ is famous for diners, which are very economical for the budget conscious customer; perhaps some research into what works here would be advantageous. I'm sure the locals would appreciate it also!
Good Luck, will look forward to stopping in to see what you have accomplished on our next visit in July 2016!

As a Jamaican, I was thrilled to read about this new eatery that offered a Caribbean flare but time in MV didn't allow me to experience the Diner. As a supporter of local businesses, it's on my list of places to visit on my next trip to the island in 2017. In the meantime, I'll spread the word! Ralston & Mavis, best wishes with your new business venture.
