They fell asleep to a sunset on the beach, drank coffee at Mocha Mott’s and had drinks at the Chowder Company. And on Tuesday night, they sealed the summer with a kiss atop the Gay Head Light.
The Vineyard, the ABC Family reality show filmed on the Island over the spring, concluded its first season on Tuesday night. The docu-drama followed a group of 20-somethings as they transitioned from adolescence to the so-called real world over the course of a Vineyard summer.
The cast was based out of the Black Dog Tavern, working and playing along the waterfront, and lived in a house on East Chop Drive in Oak Bluffs. Romantic trysts, friendship loyalties and cast members’ quest to find the right direction in life dominated the eight episodes of the show. As the show wrapped, some of the characters boarded a ferry back to the mainland, while others said they wanted to give year-round Island living a try. But whether cameras will return to follow their movements remains to be seen. ABC Family has not yet announced whether it will renew the show.
According to Nielsen ratings, the Vineyard averaged 517,000 viewers over the course of the season and received a rating of 0.4. Pretty Little Liars, a teen soap also on ABC Family, averages 3.7 million viewers per episode.
The show initially sparked widespread criticism from Islanders concerned with how the Island would be depicted. In the end, many agreed that the glossy panorama shots of the Island were beautiful, even if the “reality” of Island life was far from the truth.
“The Vineyard turned out to be a little bit like the roundabout,” restaurant owner JB Blau said, comparing it to the long-planned traffic improvement project in Oak Bluffs. “I don’t think it was as bad as we expected it to be.”
“I don’t think anyone thinks that Islanders or summer people are like that, everyone understands it was a dramatization,” he continued. “It’s not the end of the world. We have bigger fish to fry than a TV show when you have people looking for work and housing. It’s a much bigger concern than a TV show on ABC Family.”
The reality show filmed a scene at the Chowder Company in Oak Bluffs, which Mr. Blau owns, where the heartthrob Luis D’Agostino was talking out relationship woes with Islander and season regular Sean O’Brien.
Mr. Blau said customers barely noticed the light booms behind the bar and the late spring filming was a welcomed boost of income for the Chowder Company staff.
“I understand people have different opinions about it, but I’m trying to be supportive of the cast and crew,” he said. “When they were filming, we got a lot of support from them in the restaurant. It was great because the camera crews and sound people were falling in love with Martha’s Vineyard as well.”
Mr. Blau said he’s watched every episode this season except the finale.
“The Island looks beautiful,” he said. “It was fun to watch and see what experience they went through, and I know it was a big part of their lives. It was good for the Island to have our name out there.”
“Would have I watched it if it was Nantucket? I’m not the demographic,” Mr. Blau laughed. “But to see the aerial shots of the Island like that, that I’d never seen before, I thought it was an intriguing watch.”
Local musician and producer Phil daRosa was featured on the show several times this summer as a backup guitarist for aspiring singer and cast member Sophi Alvarez. Mr. daRosa has not watched any episodes from the season, but did say he has been approached by producers to “develop his role” for a possible additional season.
“Filming was fine, they were easy to work with,” Mr. daRosa said. “I knew right off the bat that it probably wasn’t going to be something hitting my demographic in terms of viewership, I could tell by the dialogue that they were shooting for the mid-teen range.”
“They were respectful of what we asked them and they were good and interesting people,” said Tim Dobel, owner of Mocha Motts.
Mr. Dobel said reality shows “aren’t my thing,” but for the little he did see of the show, he was impressed.
“There were very pretty pictures of the Vineyard,” he said.
David Broome, executive producer on the show, said that painting a beautiful picture was one of his goals when creating the show.
“I think we’re making a series that cuts through into a new genre for us — not just for us, but for the industry,” he said. “I would say we’re the prettiest reality show that has ever been made, I love it. It’s bittersweet when you wrap up a season and see the last second on screen. We have an amazing cast and I think the stories are compelling.”
The stories will continue to evolve, Mr. Broome said, and whether some cast members stay on the Island or decide to move off permanently remains to be seen.
“We’ll have to see what they end up doing big picture; it’s interesting that some of them wanted to stay who had never thought about it before,” he said.
The show held a strong social media presence on Twitter and Facebook, and was one of the top-trending Twitter topics on show nights. Mr. Broome said the attention of the show also boosted applications at the Black Dog, where inquiries for jobs have been at an all time high.
“I saw thousands and thousands and thousands of Tweets that were posted by people going, where is Martha’s Vineyard and why am I not there yet?”
Mr. Broome said he is still waiting to hear from the network whether The Vineyard will be picked up for another season, and was “proud” of the show’s debut.
“I really do want to thank the people of Martha’s Vineyard, both the public and the authorities,” Mr. Broome said. “It was a really fantastic experience from the production side and we have nothing but respect. I hope we did them pride at the end of the day and how we portrayed what the Island looks like.”

it such a pretty show and
geriggit such a pretty show and such wonderful young gorgeous people.....we love it..
My entire family loved the
Larry C.My entire family loved the show, the music and amazing photography...wonderful! In the beginning the acting was poor...better acting would have made it a "soap" and not a "reality" show genre. As the season progressed you could just feel the chemistry developing between the actors and the lines became much smoother, less mechanical. You had time to get to know the characters before the plot took some great twists and turns! Please come back for a second season and make it a 12 week season. Also, we love the Black Dog and all that it offers and it's phenomenal successes, but there is an over saturation of it...branch out, film a date at the MV Agricultural Fair with the actors wearing the fair T-shirts and not Black Dog gear! Keep up the good work!
The acting was so bad in this
AJM V NHThe acting was so bad in this series, the actors themselves should be embarrassed. And the Black Dog is not Martha's Vineyard.
Don't think they're actors,
Tricia KDon't think they're actors, so your comment wouldn't apply. I was moved many times in the few episodes I stumbled upon. I felt real emotion from several people. Don't know how controlled the plots were, but the names of the characters seem to be their real names. As an older person from a whole different upbringing, I appreciated that there wasn't constant bleeping out of their language. So over that so-called "realistic" dialogue. Not everyone swears constantly, so that's not the only reality. I'd watch a second season.
Loved the show. Please bring

The vineyard,
Isaiah Barney Campbell nyThe vineyard,
This show was a very mind blowing. The first time I watched this show I thought it was a chick-flick but then after 2 episodes or so I realized it made me have a lot of interest in the show. I watched every single episode. When a episode ended I was waiting for the next one and that's all I would think about it watching it guessing what the next one would be about. I really hope the vineyard comes back on. The show was really interesting. Many people liked the show so I think they should have a new season this summer.
I loved this show too. Bummed

dennis mvits boring ,and just a big big ad for the black dog, really bad actors and storylines, hope IF they have a season 2 its much better
Watching this show was like
AGM NYCWatching this show was like watching someone drag their nails across a chalkboard--unbearable. The plot of this show does a disservice to everyone who lives on or visits the island, it was vapid and boring and 100% fiction. The beauty of the MV community in the summer is that it becomes so diverse and all those different people not only rely on one another economically, but generally get along, and often form lifelong friendships when they otherwise would never have met! I want to see not just American summer people and islanders but what about all the kids who come from other countries (especially Eastern Europe) and work 3+ jobs to pay for school back home? What about the relatively new year round Brazilian population and the challenges that has posed? So many interesting things are happening on MV and the producers touched on exactly ZERO of them.
The only star of the show was
Jenna MVThe only star of the show was the island. Yes the aerial shots were beautiful;but, the stories and the acting were atrocious. It is easy to see why the viewership was so low. I loved watching the actors viewing the ferry approach while they were standing on the dock at Menemsha! Great feat!
That show was pathetic!
mike madden scottsdale , azThat show was pathetic!
Amazing show bring it back
Summer Burns MNAmazing show bring it back
I found it absurd the black
Vc New York CityI found it absurd the black dog was in every frame...every t shirt and mug....might as well be product placement to the most irritating and obvious I have yet beheld.....I do think the show is oddly addictive as far as reality goes....I am from the island. And there is an element which rings true between summer and island folks. But the black dog aspect I found so irritating and in your face I couldn't stomache it....and I don;t even mind the Douglass boys. they are fine but serious bad choice on the production end!
I could not watch padt 10
MariwI could not watch padt 10 minutes. It was an insult to my intelligence. People with empty heads prancing around pretending that they are somebody. Their next jobs will really be as waiters and cooks.
In Season 2, I want to see
Brock VondIn Season 2, I want to see The Vineyard gang tussle with the Jack Wills Seasonaires in Edgartown. They never seemed to go there. Maybe the Vineyard and Jack Wills camera crews will get in a rumble. I'd watch that. Madras and seersucker flying everywhere!
The "reality" was lacking. As
bd fan Vineyard HavenThe "reality" was lacking. As a fan of the Black Dog, and an ex-employee, I believe that the true stories would have been even more successful. The comedy and romance was always a reality at the Tavern. The Black Dog gave opportunities for international workers to obtain legal working status after the fall of communism. That link, combined with the local employees made for great relationships that carry on today. The Black Dog's love of sailing, fresh local food, the fishing edge, the daily menus, and international nights created some great talent when management was lacking. So many Harvard students waitressing, so many short order cooks turned into great chefs. The company's decision to outsource and franchise changed things a bit, but the business is strong, and the legacy does the island well. The show wasn't good, but as a commercial for the Black Dog, and the appearance of some locals, that's all good. The silly screen play was unnecessary, and could have been avoided...but to kiss and fight and look good at both seems to be the "reality". Now that the soap opera is over, go sit on the water's edge and go back to the Black Dog.
The show should have been
Lee Ann OBThe show should have been called A Black Dog Summer. The logo was EVERYWHERE!! Way too much!!!!!!!!!! The acting wasn't that great - not too dreadful either. It was definately scripted "reality". Same old story - different place. Nothing that made it special to our Island. I did enjoy the scenery and wished there had been more - being called the Vineyard & all. Caught a few errors in location but for those not familiar with the Island it would not have been obvious. I ONLY watched it because it was filmed here. It would have been of no interest to me if it was filmed anywhere else. My daughter (20) was not interested. She watched some of it with me but was disapointed. She commented that it was not a reality show but more like a long commercial for the Black Dog.
If I had a dollar for every
Elizabeth ChilmarkIf I had a dollar for every time one of the cast said "can we talk?" during the last episode I'd be rich. Yes, the scenery was beautifully filmed but the acting was just horrible. It didn't help that their characters were so one dimensional.
15 minutes of watching this
Kevin Robinson Atlanta, GA15 minutes of watching this show was more than enough for me. Nothing, other than the locations, said "Martha's Vineyard" to me. To make matters worse I was on the Vineyard when the first show aired and I wasted 15 minutes of "Vineyard Time" watching that garbage. That's 15 minutes I'll never get back!
I love the show and it
kaciI love the show and it definitely got better as the season went on please come back!
i actually really liked this
diana LAi actually really liked this show because yea it did have bad acting here and there but it was intriguing and it made me want to go their. i think it will promote tourism and was good for the island though it was basically advertising the black dog and was only about the white summer people. i really hope there is a second season because not only will it continue promoting tourism for the vineyard but also clear up all the cliffhangers. like what happen with lu and katie, or cat and ben?
Love the show, the story
Haps HawaiiLove the show, the story line is great! ! The acting needs some coaching, maybe "spiffy"the cast up, but definitely keep Katie & Luis...gotta find out if they stay together. Bring the show back! !! Very relaxing once you get used to the acting. ..
The island doesn't need this
Jenna ChilmarkThe island doesn't need this kind of publicity. People who know the island know its beautiful, we don't need a reality show to paint that picture. This was a poorly scripted and poorly acted show - no matter how nice the cast and crew members where behind the scenes. Hopefully with extremely low viewer numbers the producers will take their cameras and crew elsewhere. What a cheap way to portray a beautiful place that has so much more to offer than a poorly scripted mess.
One season is enough.
Bill West TisburyOne season is enough.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this show.
MadiLOVE LOVE LOVE this show. Kept up with it every week. People who do not like it do not have to watch it, there are critics on every show. AND get your facts straight-it's a reality show and Black Dog is ON Martha's Vineyard. Just look on the website.
I'd say your comments are a

I liked the show Yes but let
Simone OhioI liked the show Yes but let's remember if it's just a bunch of twenty yearolds that aren't actors then gee why would the acting be good? Real life isn't good acting that is if they were not actors. With that being said the producers should really clarify whether this is supposed to be a reality TV show with random strangers or random actors who needed much coaching. The Black Dog being the focus of the show destroyed my interest there is much more to an area than just one place. But there are all kinds of people that travel to MV but the lack of diversity was a poor choice of the producers. They could make some changes to boost the shows viewers. I'd give it a second try.
I loved the show! I hope
