Hello Evangelia
Alexandra Bullen and Eliot Coutts of West Tisbury announce the birth of a daughter, Evangelia Catherine Coutts, born on May 3, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Evangelia weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces at birth.
Alpaca Award
She started in the corporate world and gave it all up for alpaca. Now Barbara Ronchetti will be honored for Building a Better Mousetrap.
The award, presented by small business counseling group Cape Cod SCORE, is given to 15 small business that have survived five years of operation and appear headed for long-term success. Ms. Ronchetti, who began the Island Alpaca Company in 2004, was selected by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.
Volunteer of the Year
James Harrison of Edgartown has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.
Mr. Harrison, known as Jim, has run the Edgartown Meals on Wheels route since 1989. He is also a longtime deacon for the Federated Church in Edgartown, a member of the Airfield Commission for the Katama Air Park and the First and Third Club in Edgartown, and has served on the board of directors for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard.
Dean’s List
James Todd of Oak Bluffs was named to the dean’s list at Villanova University for the fall 2011 semester. Todd is enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Named Fire Chief
Following a year marked by critical staff shortage and leadership changes in the Aquinnah fire department, the town selectmen appointed Simon Bollin as their new fire chief this week.
“Welcome aboard as chief,” said board chairman Jim Newman. “In the time you’ve been acting chief you’ve done a great job in bringing the department almost up to speed. It’s really appreciated and the entire town appreciates it.”
Island Grown Radio
On May 9 Island Grown Schools coordinator Noli Taylor will join radio host Mindy Todd on WCAI’s The Point. Ms. Taylor will discuss the use of local food in school cafeterias, the proliferation of school gardens, and a series of events pegged to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day, scheduled for May 19.
