Eighty-seven year old Shirley Mayhew grew up in the Depression, remembers two wars, lived on Martha’s Vineyard in the good old days, and has traveled by herself to 27 different countries.
“None of my friends and family remember half the things I have experienced,” she said. “The Vietnam War is ancient history to my grandchildren.”
But one thing she hasn’t experienced? Telling a story on stage to 2,000 people.
On Saturday, July 27, the film Sharkwater screens at 8 p.m. at the Katherine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. The documentary directed by Rob Stewart, aims to debunk stereotypes of sharks as vicious killers of the sea. Mr. Stewart’s film travels the oceans of the world exploring the lives of sharks, the people seeking to protect them and others who try to exploit and kill them, including shark poachers in Guatemala and marine reserves in Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands.
After months of speculation and vocal criticism of the very concept of a reality television show set on Martha’s Vineyard, the ABC Family docu-soap The Vineyard premiered Tuesday night. While several cast members made appearances on national entertainment shows and tweeted live, cast member and Island resident Cat Todd sat at the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company surrounded by friends.
Calling all history buffs: Captain Martin Bayerle brings his book The Tsar’s Treasure to the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 1 with an author’s talk and a question and answer session. The book is the story of the lost luxury White Star Liner RMS Republic which sank in 1909 off Martha’s Vineyard after being hit by the SS Florida in a thick fog. Mr. Bayerle discovered the shipwreck in the early 1980s.
Artist Josh Yates has spent decades painting on Martha’s Vineyard and he brings fresh offerings with his exhibit titled Off Season Work. A reception to kick off the exhibit is from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at Gallery 13b, Beach Road Extension at 5 Corners in Vineyard Haven. His seascapes and landscapes are created in oil, charcoal, pastel and watercolor.
