Children’s Book Writing

People interested in writing books for children will meet Monday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of Carol Carrick in West Tisbury. This monthly meeting is for serious writers only. Members will read manuscripts and discuss them. They will also share news and advice from the children’s book world. Yacht Club Roulette

Test your luck and help Island kids at the same time: bring some friends to the Edgartown Yacht Club next Friday, Nov. 16, for a casino night to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Organizers promise a fun-filled evening of gaming and good times where you can try your hand at blackjack, roll for the riches at the craps table, and spin your way to the penthouse at the money wheel and roulette tables. The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Minnesingers present their annual auction and mini-concert tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 10, offering everyone a preview of the silent auction beginning at 5 p.m., with a live auction at 7 p.m. and gourmet food at the Portuguese American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs. Admission is $15.

Harvest Fair

The annual Harvest Fair and Luncheon at the Methodist Parish House in the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will display gifts, hand-knit articles, jewelry and baked goods. A luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets will be $12, with children under 12 admitted for $10. Tickets will be available at the door, or by calling 508-693-2621.

Community Poetry Reading

The West Tisbury Public Library invites poetry lovers of all ages to listen or to read aloud at an open poetry reading on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. Organized and hosted by Shelton Bank, these twice-yearly library poetry readings are a longstanding West Tisbury tradition.

Soldier’s Memories

Islander Mev Good will present his recollection of his teenage experience in World War II — when he enlisted in the 10th Mountain Division which fought in Italy — at a talk on Monday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center, 34 Pine Tree Road in Vineyard Haven. All are invited to the presentation, which includes an original recording of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s address before the House of Commons in 1940.
