Sea Chanties for Zeb

Zeb Schooner Life, a film documentary about the Vineyard’s legendary schooner Captain Zeb Tilton, airs at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 20 at the Whaling Church in Edgartown, which plays a role in the film. The event includes sea chanties by Mark Alan Lovewell and Tristan Israel, and appearances by special guests.

Zeb-Schooner Life also will be screened at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven on August 30.

Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War will meet Islanders and pre-sent their stories, and their strategies for ending the war, at a special event on Wednesday, August 20, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven. They also will take questions.

Bibliophiles Present Books

The Bibliophiles, Inc., the nation’s longest standing, continuously operating African American reading group, will present a gift of 20 books to the Oak Bluffs Public Library. The presentation marks the beginning of the 20th anniversary celebration of the New Jersey-based, not-for-profit book club, and honors four of its retired members.

Farm to School Primer

Noli Taylor, Aquinnah resident and program coordinator for the Island Grown Initiative, will discuss the Island Grown Schools program and ways for Vineyarders and visitors to get involved on Thursday, August 21. Island Grown Schools, part of the national farm to school movement, seeks to increase the amount of Island-grown foods served in Vineyard schools, develop school gardens at every school here, increase in-class agricultural education, and strengthen ties between Island family farms and schools.

Make Your Own Balm

On Tuesday, August 19 Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs returns to the Polly Hill Arboretum for her popular salve-making workshop.

This fun, hands-on workshop starts with a walk to identify and collect medicinal herbs and weeds on the arboretum grounds. Then participants make their own oil infusions and beeswax-based ointments. Learn practical knowledge on when and how to use herbal salves and take home your useful creations.
