Vineyard House is hosting a potluck with The Sisters, including Sister Rose and Sister Maurice from the Bronx, bright, big-hearted, down-to-earth women who tell engaging, funny tales of living with the daily struggle of a habit, from the perspective of a nun’s habit.
In this year-long serialized novel set on the Vineyard in real time, a native Islander (“Call me Becca”) returns home after two decades to help her eccentric Uncle Abe keep his landscaping business, Pequot, afloat. Abe fears and detests Richard Moby, the CEO of an off-Island wholesale nursery, Broadway. Convinced that Moby wants to destroy Abe personally, and all Island-based landscaping/nursery businesses generally, Abe has been obsessed with “taking down” Moby.
Hunger Banquet
On Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. if you go to the Regional High School Cafeteria, you will get a free dinner, with a side order of education. The Vineyard Committee on Hunger is sponsoring a Hunger Banquet to educate the public about world hunger.
The man in black, from his boots to bejewelled beret, was impeccably groomed on Tuesday as he stroked he neatly trimmed white beard and lamented how he’d been type-cast. He is usually the guy who gets beaten up — “the biker, the trucker, the redneck,” in his words. This experience in taking fake fisticuffs was what Broadway combat choreographer David Brimmer was passing on to an enthusiastic group of Vineyard students.
Starting tonight, three directors for Island Theatre Workshop present a festival of five one-act plays in one program at the Katharine Cornell Theatre over two weekends.
Big Benton Exhibition
The Tisbury School will end its traveling art exhibitions with Thomas Hart Benton, the American muralist and seasonal Vineyarder who delved into the images of heroic everyday Americans during the era of the Great Depression.
The exhibition celebrates ordinary people who made America great. Given the artist’s strong Vineyard ties, his fans sometimes speculate that the faces of individual Island personalities can be found in his murals.
