Church Rolls Win Choice
Yankee Magazine has recognized Grace Episcopal Church’s lobster rolls with a 2010 Editors’ Choice designation in its Travel Guide to New England, which was released on April 27.
It lets visitors in on Islanders’ Vineyard Haven eating secret: “Join the happy throngs at the parish hall for stuffed-to-overfiowing lobster rolls prepared to order by church members at a price that can’t be beat.”
For years Holly Alaimo celebrated Mother’s Day weekend with a flower show at Dragonfly Gallery. Now Featherstone Center for the Arts is continuing her tradition with The Art of Flowers show in Featherstone’s Virginia Weston Besse Gallery, opening with a reception on Sunday, May 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. which is free and open to all.
Remembering Peg
A gathering of family, friends and community to celebrate the life and art of Peg Thayer will, be at Featherstone Center for the Arts on Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs next Saturday, May 15, between 1 and 4 p.m. Many of her paintings, including some never shown before, will be on display.
Lyme Fair
The Southcoast Lyme and Tick Borne Disease Awareness Group will present an educational fair on Lyme disease on Sunday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westport Grange at 931 Main Road, Westport. This event is free and open to the public.
Self-made millionaire and best-selling author Lynn Donohue will speak at the season’s final meeting of the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network, on Thursday, May 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Ms. Donohue was living out of her car, earning minimum wage as a bar tender at a local biker hangout when she began taking brick masonry training. Before the age of 40, the former drop-out was a millionaire entrepreneur with a New Bedford-based foundation, Brick by Brick, that helps teenagers foster creativity and adults struggling with career choices.
Storyteller extraordinaire Susan Klein begins a new session of her popular memoir organization and writing workshop, Spice of Life. The eight-week course will meet, she says, “at twilight,” 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, May 6 through June 24 at the Tisbury Senior Center.
Through her courses, many people have recorded stories of their life experiences, for fun, for their family, or for posterity.
