Curry simmering in the kitchen, a guitar strumming down the hall, World Cup on the television, the quiet tapping of keys on a laptop, impromptu concerts on the porch, papier mache, laughter, singing, conversation, debate and a giant puppet named Emmett Jones. These are just some of the memories we have of the first week of New Writers. New Plays., an idea we planted in the still of winter that has now blossomed into reality along with the roses of Edgartown’s picket fences.

Next Monday night Jemima James will treat the public to the kind of concert that regularly takes place in her own home. With two musically accomplished sons (her older is currently touring Europe with Norah Jones) and Ms. James an Island legend in her own right, she has become a matriarch of sorts for the Vineyard folk music scene. It is a scene that is surprisingly young and vibrant and a perfect match for the Musical Mondays summer series at the Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Chris Morse fell in love with West Tisbury’s Granary Gallery as a teenager, when he worked summers there through high school. Fifteen years ago, he purchased the gallery with his wife, Sheila. Five years after that, they bought the Field Gallery, also in West Tisbury. And another five or so years later, they purchased what is now the North Water Gallery in Edgartown.

The North Water Gallery announces its opening show for the summer season, which runs from July 1 to July 14. The following artists will be featured:

Some years ago, as a fresh washashore, I made the mistake of honking my car horn.

It was at the blinker, coming from Vineyard Haven on an off-season day. There were but two cars: mine, and that of the woman in front who had been unaccountably stopped, for maybe a minute, maybe less. I didn’t lean aggressively on the horn, just a little beep, to say “I’m here.”
