As Mr. Collins Said, With a Modest Chuckle

The poem begins with the routine event of chopping parsley, a serious and yet absurd musing on a nursery rhyme known to all — three blind mice — and quickly spins into a quiet meditation on the sneaking cynicism that prevents us from feeling, and then, in shame, makes us feel all the more.

 

 

 

As soon as he rounded the corner to walk down to the dock, dozens of blue lights began to flash, sirens wailed and trumpets, nearly silent by comparison, tootled those age-old American anthems. Sgt. James (Chris) Brown had just returned to the Island from a nine-month tour of duty as a member of the Army 181st Infantry as part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, and the community marked it as only they could.

Kenneth Feinberg is a busy man. You wouldn’t know it, though, as he sits on a porch that cranes far above Lambert’s Cove, providing a glimpse to the Vineyard Sound. It’s a calming view for a man plagued by the problems of nations and people alike.

“It certainly is very important that I manage to escape occasionally to Martha’s Vineyard to recharge my batteries,” he says with a laugh.

Boulders, looking like the playthings of giants, are strewn over the rolling banks of South Road. Tumbling down from the walls, the rocks stand guard at this thoroughfare as they have done for hundreds of years, witnesses to all that has happened here, even as they shift with the changes in land and weather.

The dips in the hills and the swirls in the clay may change with the passing of time, but the view from the top of the Gay Head Light always will be a staggering one. From the balcony, nature is laid out before you: The ocean winks as the waves roll in, hopeful fishermen scour the deep, and the cliffs proudly stand as witnesses to all that has taken place here.

After intensive testing throughout the weekend, Lambert’s Cove Beach and Long Point Wildlife Refuge Beach in West Tisbury remained closed to swimming on Monday afternoon due elevated levels of enterococcus. All beaches in Oak Bluffs had opened by Saturday afternoon, except for Madeiros Cove, which remains closed.
