This whole thought came from a conversation I had with one of my sons in law when we were discussing the world and technology.
It started after my husband, Bud, finished writing a book about his career as a journalist that he had been working on for over two years.
As with all of us, life is a series of stages and transitions. Years of joy and trepidation. Times of fun and despair. Or just plain time.
Brown University, Tufts University, Wellesley College, Middlebury College, American University, University of Virginia. Two senior males. All the rest senior women. And there were more. And all of them women. And all of them with honors. All to be celebrated in a special way, not just for graduating from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, but for graduating with special recommendations.
We drove down the driveway, turned right so that we could see the front of the house one last time, and then the dam broke. The tears and the deep breaths and the attempt to control all well-intentioned behavior was for naught. The house looked so empty. The grounds were just beginning to look like winter with little foliage, and just by looking up and through the light of thewindows, you could tell it was empty . . . as in nothing left, no furniture, no lights, no paintings, no curtains, etc. It was time for us to keep moving.
