Funny how things end up! I was out birding on the afternoon of Oct. 19, working my way down State Beach with little luck.

Birds are on the move after the remnants of sub-tropical storm Melissa finally left us on Oct. 12.

The excitement this week is over two species of goose.

This is the time of the year that a wide variety of birds are winging their way south, passing through the Vineyard on their way.

The derby has begun and many people will be spending their waking hours on boat or shore, fishing rod in hand, with dreams of landing the big one.

Our attention shifts to songbirds powering southeastward in September.
