Windswept, a new novel by Kate Hancock, opens with the story of Josiah Cook, a farmer on Chappaquiddick who in the late 18th century witnesses pirates burying treasure on the beach.

Normally I don’t like sequels. I often find them to be inferior products. So when John Potter asked me to review On the Track of the Monmouth’s Galleon, I said yes with some dread. The book is a sequel to his autobiographical book My First Nine Lives. It continues Mr. Potter’s story from 1954 to 1958. But On the Track is a new story, and it is good.

John Potter is a retired gentleman who walks his dog Rocky twice a day along East Chop. He is a quiet, unassuming man whose life on the Island centers around family; his wife Joan, three sons and daughters in laws, and several grandchildren.

But what one sees on the bluff is just the current iteration of the man.

I am on a plant-only diet. With all those beans in my tummy, you won’t be surprised to learn that when I recently walked over to see my friend Bob Coe, I couldn’t keep my eyes from looking across the way at the old Ahoma Inn. The Ahoma Inn was a favorite eating place for East Choppers of old.

Tall, statuesque with steady ground strokes and terrific angles, Margaret Berzins is the most improved women’s player at the East Chop Tennis Club. Despite these impressive credentials, she was unable to defeat the Granny who has somehow, miraculously, made all of her gray hair disappear. I guess it helps to look the age of your opponents. In any event, Lyn Herrick defeated Margaret in the women’s singles finals 6-4, 6-3.
