Weary Firemen Put Muster on Hold

Donning their favorite clothes and backpacks full of new pens and notebooks with corners still perfectly crisp, some 2,350 students will begin a new school year this week at the Island\'s seven public schools. Before the first bell, they will shut off their iPods, put their cell phones on silent and turn their full attention to their new teachers - and old friends, perhaps unseen since summer began.

 

 

 

It was a sight unseen for the last two years on Main street, Vineyard Haven: the easy conversation amongst friends standing outside the Capawock theatre after a movie, bathed in the yellow light of the old-fashioned building with green and red trim.

Oak Bluffs, Charter School Perform Well While Edgartown Scores Are Poor on Math, English Skills Exam Results released yesterday by the state Department of Education show the Vineyard's six elementary schools turned out an uneven performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test, ranging from 100 per cent of Charter School eighth graders scoring advanced or proficient in English language arts to a third of students failing math in the Edgartown fifth and six grades.

The Martha's Vineyard Regional High School class of 2008 scored significantly above the statewide average on the mathematics portion of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test, and scored well above average in English language arts, according to results released Wednesday by the Massachusetts Department of Education.
