Cronig’s Plans a Power Play With Solar Panels in Parking Lot

Summer shoppers seeking shade may be able to do so this summer while powering up. Vineyard Power hopes to install a 12,200 square foot array of solar panels over the Vineyard Haven Cronig’s parking lot. The array, which will supply a quarter of the store’s energy needs, is made up of three “solar canopies,” which will also feature six electric car charging stations.

The percussion of daily life for too many Israelis and Palestinians includes the snare of machine gun fire, or the bass of bomb blasts. But Vineyarder Rick Bausman has ventured to the region, first in 2009 and again 2010, with new rhythms to inspire and unite the next generation of Jews, Muslims and Christians. This October he returns for a nine-day drumming bus tour of the region and he wants Islanders to have the first chance to sign up.

Longtime town finance committee member Jon Snyder is the newest member of the Tisbury board of selectmen after narrowly edging out town health agent and former selectman Tom Pachico in Tuesday’s town election. Mr. Snyder garnered 473 votes, while Mr. Pachico earned 426.

A total of 926 out of 2,930 residents, or just over 31 per cent of eligible voters, cast ballots in the election.

After the results were read at the American Legion Hall in Vineyard Haven, Mr. Snyder shook Mr. Pachico’s hand and thanked him for a hard fought election.

A Main street Vineyard Haven restaurant that has sat empty for years was singled out for biting criticism by one of the town selectmen this week, who openly questioned whether the owner was acting in good faith.

“I see Cafe Moxie opened up this morning,” said selectman Jeffrey Kristal at the Tuesday board meeting. “No, I’m kidding,” he added with evident sarcasm.

Sidewalk replacement work continued this week in Vineyard Haven on State Road, from Pine Tree Road to Camp street, part of an effort to make the area safer for pedestrians, bikers and drivers.

But the work has made life difficult for some, like Lorraine Parrish, owner of Lorraine Parrish Home, a fashion design store on State Road. On Tuesday night Ms. Parrish redecorated her mannequins in an unflattering tribute to the ongoing work.

Tisbury town administrator John Bugbee traveled to the state house this week to testify in favor of a bill that would reduce the amount of time taken by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) to act on cases.

The commission against discrimination is the state’s chief civil rights agency and hears complaints about, and sometimes awards damages for, discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry.
