At the first of Edgartown’s gallery strolls this year, which will see the wine, cheese and music — oh, and don’t forget the art — spread out at four simultaneous gallery receptions on Thursday, Elizabeth Eisenhauer will be looking “to see what that little element’s going to be that’s different and unexpected.”
Each year, there’s a little bit of a difference in Edgartown’s Evening of Fine Art, according to Ms. Eisenhauer, who owns the Eisenhauer Gallery.
The atmosphere at the Art Stroll along Dukes County avenue in Oak Bluffs is more like that of a block party than a gallery opening.
“It becomes a real kind of a community gathering place where people meet their friends,” said Don McKillop, who owns the Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery with his wife, Susan Davy. He acknowledged that the event is mostly social and not much art gets purchased, but it’s good exposure for the galleries. “We think it’s good for the town,” he said of the event.
You never know when that tap on your shoulder is going to come. We’ve been watching you for a while, they say, as you look around bewildered. No, this isn’t a Skull and Bones initiation. It’s a cappella.
The Vineyard Sound have been delighting Island ears since 1992. From June to August they can be found wearing their trademark look of shorts, oxford shirts, ties, and sandals or boat shoes at various churches and private events around the Vineyard.
Everybody loves a vacation, but perhaps nobody more than the boys who came to visit the Island last week from the Neighborhood First program of Bristol, Pa. They went fishing, swimming, bike riding and played in the arcade, but what impressed them the most was the peace and quiet and the people of the Island.
For its first birthday, the Island’s newest community center got a new name: The Swartz Family YMCA is what the sign reads above the door to the 35,000-square foot building housing a pool, fitness center, cafe and gathering place for thousands of Islanders.
Donors Jim and Susan Swartz, who have given $3 million to the cause, were honored at a one-year anniversary ceremony at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday, when the sign was unveiled.
C.B. Stark Jewelers is a place that’s so well known you probably take it for granted. If you’ve ever needed a new charm, or cuff links or had to have the battery changed in your wristwatch, chances are you went to C.B. Stark, which has stores on Main street in Vineyard Haven and North Water street in Edgartown.
The jewelry store turns 45 this year, which is a lot of years to be in business on the Vineyard.
