You might expect the first black man ever popularly elected as a United States senator would be out there rooting for the election of the first black President. But no. Edward W. Brooke has never thought race — or gender, for that matter — had anything to do with worthiness.
Imminent closure of the Edgartown Marine harbor fuel dock because of fire safety violations was averted yesterday, but only after some urgent and at times comic shuttle diplomacy involving state and town officials and the fuel supplier R.M. Packer Company.
A spokesman for the state Department of Fire Services yesterday confirmed that the department is satisfied that steps are being taken by Packer to address a list of violations at the fuel dock ranging from an invalid permit to inoperable emergency fuel shutoff valves.
Edgartown’s venerable landmark hotel, the Harbor View Hotel, will close later this month for extensive renovations, probably not to reopen until late spring next year.
Work on the kitchen, restaurant and rooms is expected to cost around $25 million and be done by May. It is the first phase of a two-year, $77 million project to refurbish and expand the hotel, which first opened in 1891.

Boat Line Reports Summer Traffic Is Up

If the traffic on Vineyard roads seems worse this summer and the straggling crowds more numerous, it's not an illusion. The most recent figures on ferry traffic prove it.
Numbers released by the Steamship Authority this week show more than 230,000 passengers and almost 40,000 cars were carried for the month of June alone, a six per cent increase in people and almost three per cent increase in cars compared with last June.
