Chappy Native Pens Kids’ Book, Talks About Growing Up Different

As a student at the Edgartown School, a counselor once told Chappaquiddick native Stephanie Duckworth-Elliott that she wouldn’t go to college, and implied that Ms. Duckworth-Elliott would not achieve in life. The young girl had a background and home life that already separated her from other kids her age — she was a member of the only Wampanoag family living on Chappy at the time, and raised primarily by her grandfather — and the counselor’s prediction made her feel even more detached from her peers.

Sailing is a summer sport, at least for the most part. It is also usually limited to people of means who belong to expensive private sailing clubs.

But Sail Martha’s Vineyard is breaking all the usual rules. Founders Brock and Hope Callen think Islanders and seasonal residents alike should be able to enjoy the sport year-round, without worrying about breaking the bank.

The Coast Guard has pledged to rebuild and the Chilmark selectmen have declared a state of emergency in the village of Menemsha following the Monday afternoon fire that destroyed the U.S. Coast Guard boathouse and most of a wooden pier leading out to the West Dock.

Voted formally by the selectmen in a special meeting held Wednesday afternoon, the third such meeting since the fire broke out, the declaration will allow the town immediately to begin cleanup and reconstruction, and possibly cut through state red tape related to procedures for town projects.

Experiment: Put 17 teenagers together under one roof. Take away their cell phones and send them to their rooms at 10 p.m., lights out at 11. Sketch out a detailed daily itinerary that includes intense workouts, short breaks for meals and absolutely no beach time.

In this case, they sing. Arias.

This is OperaFest, a two-week, summer camp-like program for some of the youngest and most dedicated opera enthusiasts in the country.

With tears in his eyes, an emotional Fred B. (Ted) Morgan Jr. stood at a podium to thank his number one supporter through the past 65 years of his life. The hundreds of people gathered to honor Mr. Morgan with a 2010 lifetime achievement award from the Edgartown Library Foundation sat silently as the guest of honor graciously acknowledged his wife, Floss, for seeing him through thick and thin for the better part of a century.

The term brownout took on a literal meaning Tuesday night, when a malfunctioning town sewer system, caused by a temporary loss of electricity, left the basement of a waterfront Edgartown restaurant flooded with sludge.

The Atlantic restaurant remained closed yesterday while cleanup continued but the owners expected to be ready to reopen on Monday.

Selectmen voted to accept the $1.9 million bid from Seaver Construction of Woburn on Tuesday night. The winning bid was some $33,000 higher than the second and only other bid submitted.
