Chappy Native Pens Kids’ Book, Talks About Growing Up Different

As a student at the Edgartown School, a counselor once told Chappaquiddick native Stephanie Duckworth-Elliott that she wouldn’t go to college, and implied that Ms. Duckworth-Elliott would not achieve in life. The young girl had a background and home life that already separated her from other kids her age — she was a member of the only Wampanoag family living on Chappy at the time, and raised primarily by her grandfather — and the counselor’s prediction made her feel even more detached from her peers.

It’s spring cleaning time in Edgartown, and voters at the annual town meeting Tuesday will take up a 63-article warrant that calls for repairs to town roadways and walkways, restoration of historic buildings, the replacement of several town vehicles and a fresh start for renovating and expanding the town library.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church. Moderator Philip J. Norton Jr. will preside over the meeting.

But as it turns out, her good luck did eventually kick in. On Tuesday night, the West Tisbury board of selectmen announced Maddie and her husband, Philippe, as the winners of homesite number three. And as it happens, three is her lucky number.
