STAY DRY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

We are writing to express our strong conviction regarding the so-called beer and wine issue in Vineyard Haven. Our conviction grows out of a good many years of experience and observation in a considerable number of communities where we have been associated.

TO SEWER, OR NOT

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

Regarding the selectmen’s rush to include the Island Grove sewer article on Edgartown’s Oct. 27 special town meeting warrant, I suggest we all take a moment to consider a few pieces of the puzzle before committing ourselves to more debt.

For one thing, if the wastewater department receives the grant, will all the residents of the Island Grove subdivision be required to hook up to the sewer system once it is installed? For me this point is key.

THANKS FOR COPING

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The Oak Bluffs water district would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all those departments and individuals who assisted us with the recent Department of Environmental Protection imposed boil-water order and especially the Oak Bluffs selectmen, town administrator Michael Dutton, emergency management coordinator Peter Martell, board of health chairman Shirley Fauteux, Oak Bluffs police and fire departments, and many more.

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

It is my understanding that the Henry Beetle Hough house has been destroyed by its new and clearly bored owners. It is not unusual for such people to “move on” after an ownership of about seven years, possibly to commit historical and architectural mayhem elsewhere.

A RECENT EXPERIENCE

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I hate bigots, bullies and abusive authority. I admire and respect professional emergency medical technicians, firemen, hospital personnel and police officers! The Vineyard is blessed with a preponderance of the latter four.

Poor Notification

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I do not know the seriousness of the current potential contamination of Oak Bluffs water but it seems rather distressing that most residents found out about the situation by word of mouth instead of any kind of an official announcement.
