The annual Possible Dreams Auction, the Island’s signature summer charity event that has sustained Martha’s Vineyard Community Services for more than three decades, is heading back to the seaside and will take place this year in Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, allowing the event to expand its capacity as the economy hammers philanthropy across the country.
Auction organizers will announce the venue change today.
Calling their late-night robbery of an elderly Capawock Theatre ticket-taker a cowardly crime of violence, the Hon. Cornelius J. Moriarty yesterday sentenced Michael B. Ellis, 21, to two years’ incarceration in the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and Brett Geddis, 18, to a year in the Edgartown House of Correction.
Cape Air will begin direct service between Martha’s Vineyard and New York June 12, starting with a daily flight between West Tisbury and White Plains Airport in Westchester County.
The airline is ready to increase the number of flights per day at any time if demand is there, according to director of communications Michelle Haynes. “We will add planes, no question, if people want this and are going to do it,” she said. The service is set to continue through Sept. 28. As of Wednesday, 26 seats had been sold on the route.
Call it the audacity of hope. The White House media office had this to say on Monday — “The President does not have plans for a vacation in Martha’s Vineyard at this time.” But no one on the Island, let alone the national media, was going to let that stand in the way of this story.
The man in black, from his boots to bejewelled beret, was impeccably groomed on Tuesday as he stroked he neatly trimmed white beard and lamented how he’d been type-cast. He is usually the guy who gets beaten up — “the biker, the trucker, the redneck,” in his words. This experience in taking fake fisticuffs was what Broadway combat choreographer David Brimmer was passing on to an enthusiastic group of Vineyard students.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest and largest United States grassroots based civil rights organization. It was founded on Feb. 12, 1909, by a multi-racial, multi-ethnic group of progressive thinkers and activists of varying political and religious backgrounds including Ida Wells Barnett, W.E.B. Dubois, Henry Moscowitz, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villard, and William English Walling. They came together and all were committed to forming an organization dedicated to answering the call of justice.
