Earlier this year, singer and songwriter Taylor Brown returned to his childhood home in Pennsylvania. Since graduating from Vassar College last spring, Mr. Brown has, for the most part, been living out of a suitcase. He has spent time on the Vineyard, a place he describes as his rock, performing with Maynard Silva and at Offshore Ale. He has tried out Providence, taking the stage at open mike nights throughout the city.
As Hurricane Florence brushed across Bermuda over the weekend, Vineyarders kept a sharp eye on the weather reports, many thinking with relief that the Island had dodged another bullet.
On Thursday evening, as guests raise their glasses to support Vineyard House, a safe, sober place for Islanders to live while in the early stages of substance abuse recovery, they will be toasting with a selection of donated waters rather than wine and beer.
The word on the street was no throwing candy. This year, citing safety reasons, volunteers at the Fourth of July parade in Edgartown would instead walk alongside the floats handing out candy. Despite the new rule, children and their parents appeared unfazed on Tuesday afternoon as they began lining up to celebrate the country's 230th birthday.

The New England region even has its own fan group dedicated to the structure - New England Lighthouse Lovers. "Lighthouses are modern day castles," said Craig Dripps, president of the East Chop Association. "They have a sense of magic and history. They hold secrets."
Piano notes ring out and fill the empty main room of the Outerland nightclub. Rather than enjoying the sunny Monday afternoon, the five-member cast of Ruthless!, an Off-Broadway musical that debuted here Thursday evening, is in full costume.
