Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

Both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams defeated their inter-Island rivals from Nantucket this week, as the girls rolled over the Whalers by a final of 18-5 and the boys won by a comfortable margin of 10-5. In recent years the teams have engaged in epic battles on both sides of the Sound, as both schools have featured strong lacrosse programs.

A custodian at the Tisbury school was arraigned in Edgartown district court last Thursday on charges of sexual assault against a child. Richard McElhinney, 48, of Vineyard Haven, has been charged with rape of a child with force, indecent assault and battery of a child under the age of 15 and enticement of a child under the age of 16.

Kelly McCarron, the teenaged driver behind the wheel during an accident last June that claimed the life of her passenger, 18-year-old Jena Pothier, was sentenced to a year in state prison last Friday by an Edgartown district court judge.

Part of a plea bargain with the Cape and Islands district attorney, the sentencing took place in an emotional courtroom after Ms. McCarron, 18, pleaded guilty to a charge of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol.

The teenage girl who drove the car last June that claimed the life of her passenger, 18-year-old Jena Pothier, was sentenced to a year in jail on Friday morning by an Edgartown district court judge as part of a plea bargain with the Cape and Islands district attorney.

Kelly McCarron, 18, pleaded guilty to a charge of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol; all other criminal charges against her were dismissed.

West Tisbury police are investigating a nighttime theft of a large amount of cash from Heather Gardens Nursery on State Road that occurred last Sunday. Police believe the thief is someone with knowledge of the business.

The Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force arrested Hannah Garde, 24, of Vineyard Haven, on new drug charges last Wednesday after executing a search warrant at a home where she was staying on Fisherman’s Knot Road in Edgartown.

Police found drug paraphernalia and two grams of cocaine hidden on her person.

The warrant was issued as a result of an ongoing narcotics investigation stemming from neighbor complaints of drug activity at the home at 36 Fisherman’s Knot Road.
