Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

Despite a clash of personalities and differing ideas about how repairs to the Oak Bluffs waterfront should proceed, improvements are underway at the old Pay Beach and Inkwell Beach along Sea View avenue, including the addition of much-needed sand and a new drainage system for an outfall pipe.

Police have issued an array of criminal charges again the teen driver in the single-car accident on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road that claimed the life of 18-year-old Jena Pothier last week, including motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday voted without dissent to approve a town-sponsored initiative to build a new gas station for boaters on the Oak Bluffs harbor. The plan was approved after a rapid review, during which several commissioners acknowledged the importance of having fuel in the harbor in time for the busy summer season.

Speed was a factor and charges are expected against the 17-year-old driver in the single-car accident on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road that claimed the life of 18-year-old Jena Pothier of Oak Bluffs Thursday evening, police said yesterday.

West Tisbury police chief Beth Toomey said charges will be brought against Kelly McCarron, 17, of Oak Bluffs, who was seriously injured in the crash and remains in serious but stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A state board that controls the sale of alcohol has been keeping an eye on the town of Oak Bluffs this spring, and the result this week was citations to four establishments for selling alcohol to minors.

The most serious violator is The Ritz Cafe, which has been ordered to close its doors for 10 days in July by the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC).
