Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

Oak Bluffs firefighters responded to a fast-moving fire that swept through a single-family home on Carole avenue on Monday. No one was injured in the blaze, although the home was a complete loss.

The fire department was called to the fire at 29 Carole avenue off of County Road at 11:45 a.m., fire chief Peter Forend said. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, with smoke and flames coming out of the roof and back kitchen area.

The town layoffs are over, and now Oak Bluffs voters must come to terms with their budget crisis, which includes a combined operating deficit of $800,000 between last year and this year.

“These are difficult times that call for hard choices,” said selectman and board chairman Greg Coogan at the weekly selectmen’s meeting Tuesday night.

At a special town meeting that has been set for Oct. 20 voters will be asked to cut nearly $500,000 from the town’s current operating budget.
