County Commission Puts Charter Study Question on Ballot in November

Come November, voters in Dukes County will decide whether to launch a formal process to study and possibly change the structure of their county government.

The Dukes County Commission on Wednesday voted 6-0, with commissioner Leslie Leland absent, to place the question of a county charter study commission on the state election ballot, scheduled for Nov. 7.

A high-end Edgartown investor group is proposing to build a members-only recreational facility in Katama as part of an ambitious effort linked to the reconstruction of the Navigator restaurant on the town harbor, and a wider revival of downtown Edgartown.

The Bird's Nest is not a house quickly forgotten.

Built in the Highlands section of East Chop 130 years ago, around the time that the United States was celebrating its first century, the whimsical cottage is painted green and embellished with Victorian architectural details such as corbels, St. Andrew's crosses and a three-story tower. An octagonal cottage sits out back.

Resignations and rescinded appointments Tuesday shattered the fragile peace between the Dukes County Commission and the Martha's Vineyard Airport commission.

Concern over actions by the Martha's Vineyard Airport commission has spurred a former airport commissioner to call for an investigation by the Massachusetts attorney general.

In a record-setting sale for the Vineyard, the waterfront Waggaman property on Tower Hill in Edgartown has sold for a total of $22.5 million.
