Attention Must Be Paid Today

Daniel Goleman, the best selling author of Emotional Intelligence, has written a new book about how paying attention is a crucial factor of success. He describes the book as an argument for why we should care about focus.

Scott Dawley has done it all: electrical work, sheet rocking, carpentry, flooring, diving for coins. “I’ve been in the trades ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper,” he said. Mr. Dawley owns Dawley Flooring and Tile and also offers handyman services.

The stage is a dinner table. As audience members enter the theatre they are encouraged to sit in the first few rows and be guests at the table. Then, as the performers guide the audience through five stories, the table transforms into a highway, a parking lot and even an ocean.

The show is called Who’s Hungry and it was performed at the Yard last Friday and Saturday night. It is a collage of puppetry, movement, audio recording, visual arts and live discussion all coming together to reveal the isolation and hopelessness of not having enough to eat.

Vineyard design doesn’t have one flavor or medium. The range in style, materials, aesthetic and use is as varied as the Island itself. But twice a week during the summer and periodically throughout the fall and spring seasons, the Vineyard Artisans Festival offers a unique opportunity to see close-up a large variety of work created by local craftspeople.

Just after a Labor Day tradition of breakfast at Art Cliff Diner with friends, Don McKillop and Susan Davy sit together on a navy leather couch in their living room. Paintings cover the walls, sculptures rest on end tables and a rack of postcards stands tall in the corner. In addition to this being their living room, it is also the Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery which the couple owns and operates.

Columbus Day weekend will mark an end and herald a beginning for Mr. McKillop and Ms. Davy.

Krishana Collins is sculpting bouquets in her flower studio. She wears knee-high, green rain boots and moves quickly down a row of three wooden tables standing end to end. Her face is set in a serious expression but she smiles easily, scrunching her nose and shaking her brown curls. She holds up a black knight scabiosa and looks down at the dark burgundy petals.
