Michael McCarthy has spent 41 years in education, 23 years in the Vineyard district and 18 as director of guidance at the high school. It's a family business he says. But this year will be his last as he plans to retire in June.

From fitness to family planning, there was something for everyone at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital 22nd annual health fair Saturday. About 200 people came for demonstrations and information.

On Thursday morning, about 35 fishermen took part in a Safety and Survival Training program, a two-day free course that walked commercial fishermen through live saving skills, including plunging into the frigid ocean in thick neoprene survival suits.

On Saturday the West Tisbury byways committee will present a brief history of the old dirt paths and cart tracks that today are protected special ways within the town. The event begins at 2 p.m. in the town library.
