Feeling Vineyard During March Madness

Every spring in upstate N.Y. the Syracuse Orangemen appear on almost every TV in almost every bar, gymnasium and department store for the March Madness college basketball tourney.

The all-Island selectmen discussed both the near and distant future at their monthly meeting Wednesday night, examining educational finances and planning for the Vineyard meeting of the governor's ferry task force.

Though he was not in attendance, Dan Flynn, the Island's ferry task force representative, sent a letter urging the all-Island selectmen to send a representative to the Feb. 22 meeting at the Performing Arts Center.

Community Soup Supper

By COLE LOUISON

Though many shops lining the once-crowded streets of Vineyard Haven closed months ago, the doors and kitchen of Grace Episcopal Church have remained open.

Each Friday, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the church hosts a winter soup supper where anyone can sit down, have dinner and find respite from the coldness and isolation which affect so many each Vineyard winter.

Moped accident victims need more training - most have never driven a motorized two-wheeler before, and the average customer gets seven minutes of training at the rental shop. Moped crash victims tend to be short-term visitors to the Island, and they crash most frequently in August. More bicyclists are hurt each summer than moped drivers, but victims of moped accidents tend to be hurt far more seriously.
