The Vineyard Playhouse will hold open auditions for a new play by MJ Bruder Munafo, My Mom Is Trying To Ruin My Life, based on the book by Kate Feiffer. The playhouse is also preparing to audition for the summer production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by MJ Bruder Munafo.

On Wednesday, May 5, any time from 4 to 6 p.m., actors can arrive at the playhouse prepared to read a short scene from the play to be provided at the audition.

Playhouse Jester

Alex the Jester will perform at the Vineyard Playhouse on Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 a person.

The first show will be appropriate for audiences as young as four and the second show, at 2 p.m., will be geared more for teens, adults and kids nine and up. All shows feature mind-bending sight gags, amazing stunts and are inspired by the rich tradition of the medieval fool.

BravÉncore is hosting Seats for Scotland, a gala dinner at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown on Thursday, April 29, in an effort to raise money for the travel expenses of the 17 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students invited to represent their country in Edinburgh this August, at the 2010 Fringe Festival, the largest theatre festival in the world.

Kids’ Theatre Workshop

Island theatre arts educator Phyllis Vecchia is offering a Thursday afternoon spring creative drama workshop from May 6 through June 10. Designed for children ages four-and-a-half to nine, classes will be held from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in the home economics room of the Oak Bluffs School. Each week, in addition to theatre exercises, costuming and character games, young thespians will reenact a new folk or fairy tale. No acting experience is necessary.

In the fall of 2007, Nicole Galland teamed up with Chelsea McCarthy to tackle some of the great Shakespearean tragedies and spin their stories into something accessible for all.
