For Islanders who have passed by or sought out groceries at Stop & Stop stores in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven in recent days, one thing is clear: Change is finally underway.

Christmas came early this year for employees at Cronig’s Market and the Vineyard Haven Stop & Shop when an anonymous customer gave every employee in both stores a $100 bill.

Stop & Shop wants to move it. The Tisbury Historic District wants to save it. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission doesn’t fully know what it wants to do with it.

Stop & Shop employees were back at work in Edgartown Monday morning as an 11-day strike came to an end. The Vineyard Haven store reopened Tuesday.

The Vineyard Haven store has been shuttered since Friday. The Edgartown store is open for business with few customers and sparse shelves. The strike has affected both Island Stop & Shop stores.

The Stop & Shop store in Vineyard Haven is closed following the Thursday job walkoff by workers in New England and on the Vineyard. The Edgartown store is open. Striking workers are picketing.
