The Seastreak ferry company has pulled the plug on its Vineyard winter commuter service, saying it didn’t have enough passengers to cover the costs.

The Oak Bluffs select board voted Tuesday to allow Seastreak to run its off-season service out of the town's harbor.

Steamship general manager Robert Davis went to Washington, D.C. to talk to lawmakers about the proposed right whale protective measures as conservation groups call for a hard implementation deadline.

The four and a half hour trip from East 35th street in Manhattan to Oak Bluffs will resume Memorial Day Weekend and run for eight weekends throughout the summer, the company said Monday. 

While most of commuters to the Island take Steamship Authority ferries from Woods Hole, a few dozen are now making their way to and from the Vineyard via New Bedford aboard the Whaling City Express, a high-speed catamaran for passengers only.

Robert Davis received a 4 per cent salary increase, retroactive to July 1, following his annual performance review by the boat line board of governors Tuesday.
