After a strong season, the seven members of the high school chess team lost in league finals to Fairhaven on Tuesday. Like any other team, they practice for competition and need permission to leave class early. But the chess team often flies under the radar.
A host of capital improvements to the West Tisbury School will begin over the summer, including bathroom renovations and roof work.

Students gathered Monday morning in the high school performing arts center for the 18th Linguini Bridge Contest. Freshman Graham Lewis was the winner with a bridge named Bridget that supported 1,170 pounds.
Earlier this month, junior Christopher Aring won first place in the South Shore Regional Science Fair, held at Bridgewater State University. No student from the high school has ever taken a first place at the regional event, although there have been several seconds, thirds and honorable mentions.
Incoming assistant superintendent Richard Smith will be paid $140,000. Superintendent Matthew D’Andrea, who takes over when Dr. James Weiss retires in July, will earn $165,000. The all-Island school committee was divided last week over the salary for Mr. Smith.
