A plan to install modular classrooms at the Tisbury School has been scrapped, less than a week before voters will convene a special town meeting.

With growing discord over the regional high school funding formula, district school committee members agreed Monday that mediation may be the only option.

Vineyard elementary schools scored well across the board on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), earning marks well above the state average. Science continues to be a standout.

The new school year began with a new three-year contract for Island teachers and support staff. It includes a two per cent increase in salaries across the board.

At a special town meeting next month, Tisbury voters will be asked to approve emergency funding for temporary classrooms and other unforeseen expenses.

English language learning students now make up 18 per cent of the public school population, the all-Island school committee learned last week.
