Tisbury’s new harbor master is Islander Michael Gately, who is expected to start his job next week following a unanimous select board vote on Monday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the board interviewed Michael Gately, an Islander who has worked for a global marine infrastructure company, Tisbury harbor master Gary Kovack, and charter boat captain Kurt Peterson.

The select board voted Tuesday to tap Edgartown police officer Gary Kovack to replace the retiring John Crocker.

A U.S. Coast Guard investigation into the sinking of a the fishing boat Robert C. Town residents showed an outpouring of support for longtime harbor master Dennis Jason, who was reappointed on Tuesday. Mr. Jason sat calmly in the front row of the meeting room at town hall as selectmen aired their concerns.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s approval last week of a ban on wastewater discharge along the state coast was welcomed by Island towns and the Steamship Authority. The ban has been planned for 20 years.
