In a unanimous vote Thursday, the select board voted to appoint Manuel Rose to replace the retiring Jeremy Bradshaw.

The select board Tuesday interviewed Marques Rivers, a Tisbury deputy fire chief, and Manuel Rose, a Chilmark deputy chief, for the chief's role.

A national shortage of volunteers has spread to the Island’s fire departments, prompting some towns to offer more paid positions and rethink their staffing structure.

Fire Chief Jeremy Bradshaw said this week he will be stepping down in February, and the select board is working on starting the search process.
