Once there, you will probably find a picture hanging on the wall of the former President eagerly peering over the counter to view the lineup of flavors, chatting with patrons or munching on an ice cream cone.

To Island for Day of Golf

Former President Bill Clinton was on-Island yesterday for a spot of golf, among other orders of business, according to sources.

Mr. Clinton arrived early Monday by plane, carrying a bag of golf clubs, and was expected to fly out late last night. Neither his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, nor his daughter, Chelsea, was travelling with him.

It was a time when the boats were full, business was bustling and the Island seemed like the center of the universe — at least for a few weeks each summer.

The span between 1993 to 2000 was when former President Bill Clinton made the Island the site of the summer White House. In local circles this period is known simply as the Clinton years, an era when the Vineyard hit its pinnacle of popularity and celebrity status.

Author, Author! President Draws Throng to Store for Autographs

They turned up in droves - and rain slickers - yesterday morning, snaking along Main street in Vineyard Haven for a chance to shake hands with the man whose name many wished were appearing on the ballot this November.

Former President Bill Clinton signed nearly 900 copies of his memoir, My Life, at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore on Monday. The store was prepared to hand out 1,000 tickets to customers but ran out of books along the way.

President Clinton Returns for Short Visit

Former President William Clinton will arrive on Martha's Vineyard today for a long weekend with his wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), and daughter Chelsea.

The family will stay at the Chilmark home of Kenneth H. Iscol, a cellular-telephone industry executive. Mr. Clinton will celebrate his 56th birthday here on Monday.

The Clintons first visited the Island in 1993 and except for 1996 have returned to its shores every year since.
